IMPORTANT: Never resign until you know for sure!

Susan Adam’s recent Forbes column, “How A Criminal Background Check Can Cost You The Job” is a necessary read for pretty much anyone who is looking for a job in today’s market.  All of my large corporate clients do background checks and I would imagine most other employers do them now too.  Background checking firms are numerous and the service they provide has gotten less and less expensive over time.  However, like everything else in life, things don’t always work out like they are supposed to.

I tell this to every candidate I work with and I badger every client until they do it:  Get written verification that your background check has been cleared BEFORE you resign from your current job. (Email is okay – as long as it is from a company employee’s email address, preferably an HR person.) Not getting a job because your offer was invalidated as a result of a poorly executed background check is a lousy way to become unemployed. It’s easy to avoid though – Never resign until you know for sure!

While fixing an error filled background check might be a pain in the ass, and could in fact cost you a good offer (though companies are supposed to give you time to investigate and resolve issues), having to do it while unemployed will be worse.  If you didn’t resign prematurely, at least you’ll have your old job while you fight to get your new one!  Hey, it could be worse…
